In the May 2010 CA Final exams, a total of 13,242 students were examined in both groups of the existing CA Final Course, while 7,424 students appeared for the New CA Final Course. This meant that on the 19th of June 2010, around 21,000 students awaited their results. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) announced an average pass percentage of 5.01%, with 3.46% for the existing course and 6.56% for the new course.

Nirmal Jain, securing the 1st rank in CA Final (Existing Course), is a remarkable example of determination and dedication. Hailing from a small town in Rajasthan with limited options for pursuing commerce, Nirmal’s passion for the subject drove him to relocate to Jodhpur. His journey teaches us a valuable lesson – pursue what you excel in, regardless of the available resources.
During our conversation, one thing became abundantly clear: it’s not a matter of being extraordinary, but rather how one’s actions and determination set them apart. Nirmal’s unwavering resolve and the extraordinary effort he put into his studies and articleship contributed to his success.
Nirmal shared his insights on his path to becoming a Chartered Accountant:
“My siblings faced a similar situation, having no opportunity to study commerce in our hometown. They chose to pursue further education in nearby cities, with some of them also opting for the CA path. I, too, realized that to study commerce, I needed to leave my hometown and complete my studies. I embarked on the journey of becoming a Chartered Accountant. I maintained a disciplined routine during exam preparation and my articleship. With limited hours in a day, I allocated seven hours for articleship, and meticulously planned the remainder for coaching and self-study. In the final exams, where the subjects are challenging, coaching is crucial to grasp complex concepts. It’s advisable to limit the use of reference books and stick to those that you find most comprehensible and conceptually sound. This approach saves time, especially when preparing for eight papers.”
“Practical training during articleship significantly influences exam performance. I completed my articleship at a prestigious firm in Jodhpur, gaining valuable experience in audit, corporate law, and taxation. I recommend that students take their practical training seriously, as it provides a competitive edge.
While I had high expectations for my results based on my own assessment, achieving ‘Rank 1’ was unexpected. The evaluation process has been rigorous, resulting in a low pass percentage, leaving many of my friends disheartened.”
“I am currently considering three options for the future, although my initial goal was to pass the CA Final exams. My family and peers suggest pursuing further studies and aiming for the IAS. I also have the options of practicing or seeking employment. I am taking my time to make a well-considered decision. For now, I am busy fielding numerous congratulatory calls and visits from family friends who are thrilled for me. It’s essential to recognize that the results are not manipulated; this is a professional course, and students should grasp the technical aspects of the subjects instead of hastily blaming ICAI. To address such concerns, ICAI has announced that, starting May 2011, students will be able to access their answer scripts physically, demonstrating their commitment to transparency.”

Avoid succumbing to peer pressure and choose the study materials that suit your learning style, sticking with them unless you discover a superior alternative.
